That violence made him respected.

That control kept him safe.

But a five-year-old child had walked across his ballroom while armed men stood frozen.

She had risked everything because she knew something was wrong.

And Dante, surrounded by powerful people, had nearly died because he trusted the wrong man.

At seven fifteen, Clara knocked.

“Mr. Moretti?”

He looked up.

She stood in the doorway with a small envelope.

“What's this?”

“My resignation.”

Dante stared at it.

Clara's voice shook.

“I can't keep Sophie here. Not after what happened.”

He looked at the envelope for a long moment.

Then nodded.

“You're right.”

Clara blinked.

“I am?”

“Yes.”

He rose from the desk.

“This house isn't safe for a little girl. And that's my responsibility.”

Clara swallowed.

“Thank you for understanding.”

Dante pushed the envelope gently back toward her.

“You don't have to resign to keep your daughter safe. But if you want to leave, I won't stop you.”

He opened a drawer.

Inside was a folder.

“I also want to make sure you never have to choose between a paycheck and Sophie's safety again.”

Clara frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“I've arranged for the salary and benefits you were owed, along with a separate reward for what Sophie did. It's yours, without conditions. My attorneys will make sure everything is legal and transparent.”

Clara shook her head.

“Mr. Moretti, we don't want your money.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

Dante looked toward the window.

“Because your daughter reminded me what a decent person looks like.”

Clara's eyes filled.

He continued.

“And because I think it's time I learned how to become one.”

## CHAPTER 7 — A DIFFERENT KIND OF POWER

Six months later, the Moretti estate looked different.

The armed guards were gone from the front gates.

The private meetings that once lasted until dawn had stopped.

Businesses that couldn't survive without threats and illegal payments were being dismantled.

Dante had begun cooperating with federal investigators, providing records and testimony about operations he had spent years protecting.

He knew there would be consequences.

He did not expect forgiveness for everything he had done.

And he was no longer trying to purchase it.

But he could choose what he did next.

The most meaningful change had nothing to do with money.

It began with a small building on the South Side.

An old community center that had closed five years earlier.

Dante purchased it through a public, independently managed charitable foundation.
