Tall.

Blonde.

Expensive camel coat.

Rain darkening the shoulders.

I recognized her immediately.

Vanessa Cole.

Daniel’s mistress.

For one second, neither of us spoke.

Then Vanessa said, “If you want to survive this, you need to listen to me.”

Evelyn stepped between us.

“You need to leave.”

“Please.” Vanessa’s voice shook. “Daniel knows she found the accounts.”

I stared at her.

“How do you know that?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because I helped create them.”

My stomach dropped.

Evelyn shut the door.

Vanessa stood in the middle of the apartment gripping her handbag with both hands.

“I knew about the transfers,” she said. “But not everything. Not at first.”

I wanted to hate her.

Part of me already did.

“You slept with my husband.”

Her face tightened.

“Yes.”

“You laughed about me.”

“Yes.”

“You called me helpless.”

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.”

“Then why are you here?”

She swallowed.

“Because Daniel is going to blame you for everything.”

The room went still.

Evelyn said, “Explain.”

Vanessa opened her bag and removed a flash drive.

“Daniel has been moving money out of Mercer Development for almost three years. Fake vendors, shell companies, inflated contracts. But he couldn’t put everything in his own name.”

She looked at me.

“So he used Claire.”

I felt numb.

“He forged my signature?”

“Not just your signature.”

Vanessa pulled out printed forms.

“Tax documents. Authorization agreements. Corporate filings.”

My name appeared again and again.

Claire Mercer.

Claire Mercer.

Claire Mercer.

I whispered, “Why?”

“Because if anyone investigated, Daniel wanted the paper trail to point to you.”

My knees weakened.

Evelyn guided me into a chair.

Vanessa continued.

“He told me you handled the family finances. He said you were careless.”

I laughed once, sharply.

“I wasn’t allowed near the company finances.”

“I know that now.”

“Now?”

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“For a long time, I believed him.”

Evelyn held out her hand.

“The drive.”

Vanessa gave it to her.

“What’s on it?”

“Internal emails. Transfer logs. Recorded meetings.”

I looked up.

“Recorded?”

Vanessa nodded.

“I started recording Daniel three months ago.”

“Why?”

Her eyes filled.

“Because I found my name on accounts too.”

The room fell silent.

That changed everything.

Vanessa had not merely been Daniel’s mistress.

She was another future scapegoat.

“He told me he loved me,” she said quietly. “He said he was leaving you. Then I found documents showing he had opened two LLCs in my name. That’s when I realized he wasn’t planning a new life with me.”
