“You left me at the altar.”

“Yes.”

“Do you know what people are saying?”

“I can imagine.”

“My father wants damages.”

“Our attorneys can handle whatever contractual claims exist.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“There. That's the real Adrian. Lawyers and contracts.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“The old Adrian would have married you because lawyers and contracts told him to.”

Her expression changed.

“Did you ever love me?”

Adrian considered lying.

He didn't.

“I cared about you.”

“That wasn't my question.”

“No.”

Tears appeared in Vanessa's eyes.

For once, Adrian saw not the polished socialite or merger partner, but a woman whose life had also been arranged by powerful families.

“Did you love me?” he asked.

Vanessa looked away.

After several seconds, she whispered, “I don't know.”

And strangely, that made forgiveness easier.

The wedding was officially canceled.

The merger collapsed.

Mercer Global shares fell nine percent in two days.

Then stabilized.

Life continued.

But Adrian did not return to the man he had been.

Three weeks later, he walked into the diner.

Emily saw him and groaned.

This time, he wore jeans, a sweater, and ordinary shoes.

“Please tell me you didn't lose another billion-dollar wedding.”

“Only one per quarter.”

She laughed despite herself.

Adrian sat at the counter.

“I need your help.”

“With what?”

“Something you told me.”

Emily narrowed her eyes.

“That's dangerous.”

“You said to do it for somebody else.”

“And?”

“I started.”

He slid a folder across the counter.

Emily didn't touch it.

“What is that?”

“A program.”

“Adrian.”

“Not for you.”

That made her pause.

He explained.

Mercer Global owned seventeen commercial properties in Boston with unused ground-floor space.

Adrian had ordered six of them converted into community kitchens, warming centers, job-placement offices, and temporary housing support centers.

Not named after him.

No giant Mercer logos.

No gala.

No $10,000 dinner plates.

Just places where someone could get a hot meal without proving they deserved one.

Emily opened the folder.

Her expression slowly changed.

“This is real?”

“Yes.”

“You're funding all of it?”

“Personally for the first five years. After that, an independent foundation will control it.”

“Why independent?”

“So I can't turn it into a vanity project.”

Emily looked at him.

“You actually listened.”

“You're surprisingly difficult to ignore.”

She smiled.

Then Adrian pointed at the final page.

“I want you on the advisory board.”

Emily immediately closed the folder.

“No.”

“Read the compensation.”
