The Mafia Boss Pretended to Be Broke… His Fiancée’s Next Move Left Him Speechless
PART 1

Nikolai Cross wanted to know who would love him if the money disappeared.

So he staged a fake collapse, told his fiancée the empire was gone, and waited to see whether she would stay. But the quiet maid polishing his floors found the phone Elise forgot to hide — and uncovered the betrayal that was already moving through the walls of his penthouse.

The empire did not crumble with a gunshot. It fell, or at least pretended to fall, with a whisper, a forged bank statement, and a phone call staged so perfectly that even the people closest to Nikolai Cross believed the king of the city had finally been cornered.

That was the plan. A clean test. A controlled lie. A way to see which faces changed when the millions vanished.

Nikolai had built his life on suspicion, and suspicion had kept him alive longer than mercy ever could. He knew how men smiled before betrayal. He knew how loyalty sounded when it was being rented by the hour. At thirty-four, he had more money than some banks, more secrets than most governments, and fewer people he trusted than could fit around one dinner table.

And still, like a fool, he had wanted to believe Elise.

Elise Ashcroft came into his world wrapped in elegance and expensive restraint. A former gallery curator with perfect posture and calm hazel eyes, she knew how to move through wealth without appearing impressed by it — which wines to praise, which artists to reference, when to place her hand lightly on Nikolai’s arm so the men around them understood she had access to him no contract could buy.

When Nikolai proposed, she cried. Real tears, or at least that was what he had wanted to believe. They slid down her flawless face beneath the gallery lights, catching in the curve of her smile as she stared at the diamond like it had just rewritten her future. She said yes in front of half the city’s elite, and the applause that followed sounded almost like victory.

But Nikolai had watched her eyes. Even then. He had wondered whether she was crying because she loved him, or because she had finally reached the top of the staircase.

Tonight, he intended to find out.

—

The penthouse smelled of cedar, old leather, expensive scotch, and lies. Nikolai stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows with a crystal tumbler in his hand, looking down at the city moving beneath him. He owned parts of it no one could see — warehouses along the river, shipping routes through private contracts, imported goods that arrived clean on paper and complicated in reality. His empire was not one thing. It was a web.
