But tonight, in the story he had created, the web had burned.

On the mahogany desk behind him sat a leather-bound folder of forged documents — frozen accounts, seized assets, federal pressure, shell companies exposed, legal catastrophe presented in language precise enough to look more real than truth. He had paid a fortune for the illusion of ruin, believing it would buy him clarity.

The dining room doors opened. Elise entered wearing a silk slip dress that caught the low light like water.

“Nik,” she said, her voice soft and amused. “Dinner is getting cold.”

“Sit down, Elise.”

He did not turn immediately. Silence was a tool. Most people were terrified of it; they filled it with mistakes, apologies, explanations they hadn’t meant to offer.

Behind Elise, pressed nearly into the shadow of the china cabinet, stood Wren Delacroix with a silver serving tray in both hands. She was twenty-two, small, quiet, dressed in the black-and-white uniform of the household staff, her brown hair pulled into a severe bun. Nikolai barely noticed her most days — not cruelty exactly, worse. Habit. Wren was part of the apartment’s rhythm, the soft footsteps before dawn, the polished floors, the world made clean by a woman whose name most guests never bothered to learn.

But Wren noticed everything. Being invisible had taught her that.

Nikolai finally turned and took his seat at the head of the table, ignoring the meal in front of him, the folder placed beside his glass.

“The Harborside warehouses were raided.”

Elise’s fork stopped halfway to her mouth. A tiny pause — too small for ordinary people to catch. Wren caught it. Nikolai caught it too.

“What do you mean raided?”

“The accounts are frozen. The shell companies are compromised. My lawyer says indictments come down tomorrow morning.”

## PART 2

For three full seconds, Elise Ashcroft did not move.

Then she placed her fork beside her plate.

Carefully.

Almost too carefully.

Nikolai watched her face.

Fear appeared there, but not the kind he had expected.

Not fear for him.

Calculation.

“How bad?” she asked.

“Everything.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“The penthouse is mortgaged. The liquid accounts are inaccessible. Cross Maritime will probably be placed under federal control before the end of the week.”

Elise’s eyes flicked toward the windows.

Then the paintings.

Then the chandelier.

Inventory.

Nikolai felt something cold settle beneath his ribs.

He had spent six months wondering whether Elise loved the man or the empire.
