I packed my suitcase.

I took my documents.

I took my mother’s photograph.

I closed the trunk.

And when Nathan’s headlights finally swept across the driveway at midnight, he discovered something neither of us had understood before that night.

A woman can spend years waiting because she loves you.

She can forgive canceled dinners, unanswered messages, forgotten promises and rooms that grow colder every time you choose somewhere else.

She can leave the porch light on so many nights that you begin believing it will burn forever.

But one night, she may finally hear the sentence you’ve been saying through every absence.

Don’t wait for me.

And when she finally listens, you may discover that the saddest thing in the world is not coming home late.

It is coming home to find that the person who always waited has learned how peaceful life can be when she stops.

Nathan told me not to wait up.

So I finally listened.

And for the first time in a very long time, I went home.
