Chapter 3
The sheer venom recorded in those words sucked the air out of the foyer like an open vacuum. Julian’s mouth opened and closed silently, his eyes darting frantically toward the stairwell behind the officers.
"Audio and visual feeds in this residence are hardwired into a secure cloud repository," Elena stated smoothly. "Every word, every threat, and every physical advance was captured in high-definition digital storage."
"That is an illegal wiretap!" Julian hissed, his voice cracking beneath the mounting weight of panic. "You cannot use surveillance inside my marital home against me! This entire residence belongs equally to both of us!"
Elena produced a certified deed stamped with the county registrar’s gold seal, holding it directly before his eyes. "This property was purchased solely under Maya Lin’s family trust five years prior to your acquaintance."
"Furthermore," Elena added with a razor-thin smile, "the prenuptial agreement you signed in haste contained a strict domestic misconduct clause. Any act of violence or attempted financial extortion immediately forfeits all spousal claims."
Julian grasped his head in his hands, pacing the narrow hallway like a trapped animal searching for an escape. "I was coerced! I never read those obscure technical clauses! You planned this ambush from day one!"
"You planned your own downfall, Julian," I said softly, stepping forward into the pool of overhead light. "You assumed I was a passive accountant who would surrender her independence the moment a ring was slipped on."
He glared at me with pure hatred burning through his tears. "You lied to me! You pretended to be gentle, shy, and traditional! You cooked, you cleaned, and you listened to me without arguing!"
"I offered you kindness because I value peace, not because I lack strength," I answered him firmly. "Patience is never permission for abuse, and gentleness must never be mistaken for defenselessness."
Detective Vance signaled to her partner, Officer Miller, who immediately stepped forward with heavy steel handcuffs. "Julian Mercer, you are being detained for felony domestic assault, attempted extortion, and criminal property destruction."
"Wait! You cannot arrest me without hearing my mother’s testimony!" Julian cried out desperately, pulling out his vibrating phone. "She is downstairs right now! She knows the true nature of this deceitful woman!"
Almost on cue, frantic footsteps clattered along the exterior corridor, followed by a sharp gasp at the open doorway. Julian’s mother, Evelyn Mercer, rushed inside, draped in an expensive cashmere wrap and clutching a designer handbag.
