# PART 2 — THEY THREATENED TO DISOWN MY FOUR-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER WHILE SHE WAS IN THE ICU. SO I MADE SURE THEY COULD NEVER USE US AGAIN.

For a moment, I genuinely wondered if I had misunderstood him.

My father had just threatened to stop treating my four-year-old daughter like family because I wouldn't give them my Social Security number.

While she was lying in an ICU bed.

While a machine helped her breathe.

And all because my brother wanted a honeymoon he couldn't afford.

I looked at Layla, her tiny chest rising and falling beneath the hospital blanket.

Then I asked my father one question.

"Did you just threaten my daughter?"

He sighed dramatically.

"Oh, don't twist my words. You know what I mean."

"No, Dad. I want you to explain exactly what you mean."

"You're making this difficult for everybody. Jason and Brianna have already booked their trip. Your mother promised we'd help them. The loan needs someone with decent credit, and you're the only one who qualifies."

I closed my eyes.

They hadn't even asked whether I would cosign.

They had simply decided I would.

"How much is the loan?"

He hesitated.

"That's not important."

"How much, Dad?"

"Eighteen thousand."

I actually laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because eighteen thousand dollars was apparently a reasonable amount to borrow for a honeymoon, but driving twenty minutes to see my dying child was too much trouble.

"You want me to take responsibility for an eighteen-thousand-dollar loan?"

"It's not your responsibility. Jason will make the payments."

"Then Jason can apply for it himself."

"His credit isn't good enough."

"Then he can't afford the trip."

My father's voice hardened.

"You've always been jealous of your brother."

There it was.

The accusation I'd heard since childhood.

Whenever Jason received something I didn't, I was jealous.

Whenever I refused to fix his mistakes, I was selfish.

Whenever I questioned why the rules were different for him, I was dramatic.

I was thirty-four years old, sitting beside my daughter in intensive care, and my father was still using the same words he'd used when I was twelve.

But something had changed.

For the first time, they didn't work.

"Layla has pneumonia," I said. "She's been in the ICU for two days. Did you know that?"

A pause.

Then he said, "Your mother mentioned something."

Something.

My daughter was something.

"Did you read my message?"
