Celeste let him lie.

Years passed.

Ethan grew up.

Noah grew up somewhere else, seeing his father according to arrangements Victor concealed from his wife.

Celeste never contacted the boy.

Whatever Victor had done, Noah was a child.

Then Victor became ill.

The cancer responded to treatment initially, then returned aggressively.

Chapter 2 — Victor’s Final Gifts Exposed Where Thirteen Years of Secret Payments Had Gone
During his final year, Celeste still accompanied him to appointments.

That confused her sister.

“How can you take care of him after what he did?”

Celeste did not have a satisfying answer.

Twenty-one years of marriage did not disappear merely because part of it had been fraudulent.

She could be furious with Victor and still refuse to abandon a dying person.

What she would not do was let him rewrite the financial history of their marriage.

That was what the hospital documents attempted.

Victor wanted Noah provided for.

Celeste did not object to that principle.

What stunned her was the method.

His asset schedule identified eight rental properties and three luxury vehicles he intended to transfer for Noah’s benefit, with Melissa expected to manage much of what a minor could not manage himself.

The problem was that Victor did not individually own most of what he was attempting to give.

Six properties belonged to Ward Family Holdings.

Two of the vehicles were also company assets.

A seventh property had been acquired using money from a joint investment account and titled in a way that created significant marital ownership questions.

The lake house was jointly titled to Celeste and Victor.

Victor could make decisions about assets and interests he actually controlled, subject to estate and marital-property rules.

He could not convert Celeste’s ownership into his merely because he was dying.

Martin, the estate attorney, immediately stopped treating the documents as routine.

He was visibly unhappy.

Victor had given him an asset schedule describing the properties as available for transfer. Martin had not been told there was a dispute about company authority or ownership.

Melissa spoke first.

“Victor told me those buildings were his.”

Celeste looked at her.

“He managed them. That isn’t the same thing.”

Victor finally opened his eyes.

“You knew?”

“For thirteen years.”

His face changed.

Not because Celeste had discovered Melissa.

He realized she meant the finances too.

Celeste’s lawyers moved quickly after the hospital meeting. They sought to preserve records and prevent disputed transfers from being completed while ownership and company authority were reviewed.
