Evelyn stared at her.

“And you believed him?”

“Grant said you’d stopped loving him.”

“So you decided to help?”

Caroline flinched.

“I know what I did.”

“No,” Evelyn said. “You know what you got caught doing.”

Her sister lowered her eyes.

Then she reached into her purse.

“I brought something.”

A small flash drive.

“Raymond gave Grant a folder of documents last month. Grant asked me to scan them for the foundation archives. I kept copies.”

Evelyn didn’t move.

“What kind of documents?”

“Trust amendments. Property transfers. Payments. And emails about your medical treatment.”

Evelyn felt the air leave her lungs.

“Why are you giving me this?”

Caroline’s voice broke.

“Because yesterday, Raymond told me that once you were declared permanently unfit, Grant could file for divorce and I could become his wife.”

Evelyn said nothing.

“And then he said something else.”

“What?”

Caroline swallowed.

“He said if there was a baby, they would handle it.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“Handle it how?”

“He wouldn’t say.”

Evelyn stepped backward.

Caroline reached for her.

“Evie, I swear I didn’t know—”

“Stop.”

Her sister froze.

Evelyn looked at the flash drive.

Then at the woman she had protected since childhood.

“You are going to give that to my attorney. You are going to tell him everything. And you are going to tell the truth even when it makes you look terrible.”

Caroline nodded.

“Will you ever forgive me?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled for the first time since the dinner.

“I don’t know.”

Caroline began sobbing.

“But I do know this,” Evelyn continued. “You will never again confuse my kindness with permission to hurt me.”

She closed the door.

And for the first time in her life, she did not feel responsible for fixing her sister’s pain.

The investigation lasted eleven weeks.

By the third week, Raymond had been removed from every position of authority within Mercer Holdings.

By the fifth, forensic accountants had identified additional questionable transactions totaling more than twenty-six million dollars.

By the seventh, investigators had uncovered evidence that Raymond had directed the creation of false consent records.

And by the ninth, Caroline’s flash drive had become a central part of the case.

The emails revealed that Raymond had known about Evelyn’s pregnancy months before the dinner.

He had ordered surveillance of her medical appointments.

He had instructed company lawyers to draft language giving the Mercer Family Stewardship Council authority over any descendant born during a marital dispute.
