Chapter 1
The moment Mr. Harlan broke the black wax seal, my husband stopped smiling.
I had never seen Caleb afraid before.
Not when our marriage began falling apart. Not when I discovered his affair. Not even when my father confronted him six weeks before his death.
But standing beside my father's coffin, surrounded by hundreds of mourners, Caleb suddenly looked like a man who had heard a door lock behind him.
Mr. Harlan unfolded a single sheet of cream-colored paper.
"Before I read this," he announced, "I want everyone to understand that Mr. Richard Whitmore prepared these instructions personally, while fully competent, and signed them in the presence of independent witnesses."
Caleb stepped forward.
"This is completely inappropriate. We're at a funeral."
Mr. Harlan adjusted his glasses.
"Your father-in-law anticipated that objection, Mr. Bennett."
A murmur traveled through the chapel.
Vanessa slipped her hand from Caleb's arm.
I stood perfectly still, one hand resting against my eight-month-pregnant belly.
Mr. Harlan looked directly at me.
"Eleanor, your father wanted you to hear his words before anyone else."
Then he began reading.
"My dearest Ellie,
"If this letter is being read, I have gone somewhere you cannot follow me yet. And I know you will be frightened.
"But sweetheart, I need you to remember something.
"You were never valuable because of my money.
"You were the most valuable thing in my life long before I earned my first million."
My vision blurred.
For a moment, I could hear my father's familiar voice.
The same voice that had read bedtime stories when I was six.
The same voice that had comforted me when my mother passed away.
The same voice that had whispered, three days before his death, "Promise me you'll never let anyone convince you that you are small."
Mr. Harlan continued.
"I have spent the last six months investigating certain matters concerning my business, my family, and the man my daughter married.
"What I discovered broke my heart.
"But it also convinced me that I must protect my daughter and granddaughter in ways I should have considered long ago."
Caleb's face turned pale.
"Stop reading," he demanded.
Mr. Harlan didn't even look at him.
"Effective upon my death, all controlling interests in Whitmore Global Holdings, together with my personal investment portfolio and the family properties, shall remain under the governance of the Whitmore Family Trust.
"My daughter, Eleanor Whitmore Bennett, is the sole primary beneficiary and designated successor trustee, subject to the trust's established safeguards.
