Chapter 4
Margaret’s name.
Adrian’s father, Charles Vale.
Dates.
Numbers.
Then one sentence made the world narrow around her.
**The marriage solves the ownership problem. Once Elena is legally part of the Vale family, she’ll cooperate.**
Elena read it twice.
Her father’s reply was beneath it.
**She doesn’t need to know before the wedding.**
Her hands began shaking.
Vincent reached toward her.
Then stopped before touching her.
That small restraint almost hurt more than comfort would have.
“My father sold me.”
“No.”
Elena looked up sharply.
“Do not defend him.”
“I’m not. I’m saying the distinction matters.”
“What distinction?”
“He didn’t sell you.”
Vincent’s eyes turned cold.
“He tried to.”
---
Vincent took her to an office overlooking the East River.
Not his home.
Elena noticed that.
He gave her privacy to change.
One of his assistants arrived with trousers, a cream sweater, shoes, toiletries, and a coat.
No dress.
No jewelry.
Nothing chosen to make Elena look like Vincent Moretti’s woman.
For some reason, that mattered.
Elena left her wedding dress hanging in the bathroom.
When she emerged, Vincent was standing beside a conference table with two attorneys and a woman Elena recognized immediately.
“Samantha Reed?”
The woman rose.
“Elena.”
Samantha had been Marlowe Shipping’s general counsel until Henry fired her nine months earlier for what he called “irreconcilable strategic differences.”
Elena suddenly understood those differences.
“You knew.”
Samantha nodded.
“Some of it.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I tried.”
Elena frowned.
Samantha opened a file.
“Three emails. Two meeting requests. One certified letter.”
“I never received them.”
“No.”
Vincent placed a page before her.
All correspondence addressed to Elena had been rerouted through Henry’s executive office.
Her father had isolated her.
Not emotionally.
Operationally.
Deliberately.
Elena sat down.
For the next two hours, they reconstructed the destruction of Marlowe Shipping.
Adrian’s family had acquired the company’s debt while quietly positioning Vale-controlled entities to purchase its most valuable routes after default.
Henry discovered the scheme too late.
Instead of telling Elena, the company’s chief operating officer and largest individual shareholder after him, he made a bargain.
The marriage would proceed.
Vale Capital would restructure the debt.
Henry would retain his title.
Adrian would eventually control the combined companies.
And Elena?
Elena would become the respectable bridge between them.
There was only one problem.
Adrian had changed his mind.
“Why?” Elena asked.
Samantha and Vincent exchanged a glance.
Elena noticed.
“What?”
Vincent answered.
