CHAPTER 2 — THE HUSBAND THEY NEVER EXPECTED TO SEE

“Scrub harder, Emma! Do you think we're paying you to stand around?”

Jennifer's voice cut through the outdoor kitchen like a whip.

My wife lowered her head.

“I'm trying. The grease won't come off.”

Jennifer laughed.

“Five years, and you're still useless. Honestly, I don't know what my brother ever saw in you.”

Emma said nothing.

She simply picked up another pot and started scrubbing.

I stood frozen behind them.

The woman who had once worked two jobs to help me open my first restaurant was now cleaning dishes at her own mansion.

And my sister was treating her like dirt.

Jennifer took a sip of champagne.

“Make sure everything is finished before midnight. Mother wants the kitchen spotless.”

Emma nodded.

“Can I please eat something first? I haven't eaten since breakfast.”

My heart nearly stopped.

Jennifer rolled her eyes.

“There's leftover food from the party. You can have whatever the guests don't want.”

That was enough.

“Jennifer.”

My voice came out colder than I expected.

My sister turned.

The champagne glass slipped from her fingers and shattered on the concrete.

Her mouth fell open.

“D-Daniel?”

Emma slowly raised her head.

For a moment, she didn't move.

Her eyes searched my face as though she was afraid I wasn't real.

“Daniel?” she whispered.

I stepped forward.

“Emma.”

The sponge fell from her trembling fingers.

Then she ran toward me.

I caught her in my arms.

She buried her face against my chest and began sobbing.

Not the happy tears I had imagined on the plane.

These were the cries of someone who had been holding herself together for far too long.

I wrapped my arms around her.

“I'm home, sweetheart.”

She clung tighter.

“Please tell me you're really here.”

I kissed her forehead.

“I'm here. And I'm not leaving you alone with this again.”

Behind us, Jennifer finally found her voice.

“Daniel! Oh my goodness! You should've called! We would've prepared something special!”

I looked at her.

“Special?”

She forced a smile.

“Yes! A welcome-home dinner! This is such a wonderful surprise!”

I glanced at Emma's swollen hands.

Then at the filthy pots.

Then back at my sister.

“Tell me something, Jennifer.”

“Of course.”

“Why is my wife washing dishes at a party in her own home?”

Jennifer's smile tightened.

“Oh, that! Emma insisted on helping. You know how she is. She loves keeping busy.”
