Margaret whispered, “Daniel...”

“No.”

I stood.

“You knew exactly what Emma did for me. And you punished her because you couldn't stand that I loved someone you couldn't control.”

Michael suddenly pushed back his chair.

“You can't just throw us out!”

I looked at him.

“I'm not going to argue with you.”

Rebecca stepped forward.

“Your authority over Daniel's accounts and property has been revoked. Formal notices have been delivered. Any disputed transactions will be investigated, and you will receive instructions regarding the return of property and the move-out process.”

Jennifer's face turned white.

“You're suing us?”

I looked at her.

“I'm pursuing the truth.”

My mother stood slowly.

Her eyes filled with disbelief.

“You would choose that woman over your own blood?”

For a moment, I remembered being a little boy.

My mother holding my hand on the first day of school.

Her cooking Sunday dinners.

Her telling me family was everything.

Then I remembered Emma standing over those greasy pots.

Hungry.

Exhausted.

Afraid.

I looked at Margaret.

“Emma is my family.”

And then I said the words that ended everything.

“You're no longer welcome to control her life. Or mine.”

CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN WHO FINALLY GOT HER VOICE BACK

I expected my family to leave quietly.

I was wrong.

Jennifer stormed into the living room, grabbed her phone, and started recording.

She claimed I was abandoning my elderly mother.

Michael threatened lawsuits.

Margaret called relatives and told them Emma had manipulated me.

Within hours, the family group chats were exploding.

But this time, I didn't rush to defend myself publicly.

I let Rebecca handle the legal issues.

And I focused on Emma.

That afternoon, I found her standing inside our old bedroom.

The room my mother had taken over.

Emma was staring at a framed wedding photograph that had been moved into a storage closet.

She held it against her chest.

“Daniel?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Can I ask you something?”

“Anything.”

She looked around the room.

“Do we have to stay here?”

I was surprised.

“This is our house.”

“I know.”

Her voice trembled.

“But every room reminds me of something.”

She pointed toward the bathroom.

“Jennifer used to lock away my toiletries because she said they were too expensive.”

Then toward the closet.

“Your mother gave away most of my clothes.”

Finally, she looked toward the door.

“Michael used to stand there and remind me that nobody would believe me.”
