I went to the airport to say goodbye to my best friend and accidentally caught my husband kissing the woman he swore was “just a coworker.” But the affair wasn’t the worst part. The silence that fell over the concourse between us was absolute, cutting clean through the hum of rolling suitcases, mechanical boarding announcements, and the low chatter of travelers rushing to catch their flights.

Brian froze as if an electric current had locked his joints. His jaw went slack, his pupils dilating until the grey in his irises was swallowed whole. The dark leather briefcase under his left arm slipped an inch before his fingers convulsed, clutching it against his ribcage like a shield.

Vanessa reacted differently. Her hand, which had been resting possessively against the lapel of Brian’s wool jacket, didn't pull away immediately. Vanessa’s lips parted, a sharp intake of breath hissing between her teeth. Her arm finally dropped from Brian’s side, though she took a half-step back, shifting her weight as if calculating the quickest path around me.

“Elena, listen to me,” Brian began, stepping forward, his hands coming up in a placating gesture. It was his signature posture—the earnest, misunderstood entrepreneur whose only flaw was working too hard for his family. “This isn’t what it looks like. We’re on our way to Scottsdale. The summit. The tech incubator presentation I told you about last Tuesday. Vanessa’s coordinating the logistical deck, and we were just—”
