Chapter 6
“Your brother,” I confirmed, feeling a profound, tranquil satisfaction settle deep into my bones. “The forensic accountant whose career you nearly destroyed seven years ago when you blamed him for the missing capital at your first failed venture. Did you really think he forgave you, Brian? Did you really think he spent the last three years auditing fortune five hundred firms only to let his own brother run the exact same embezzlement scheme on his sister-in-law?”
I watched the realization wash over Brian in agonizing, slow-motion waves.
For years, Brian had treated his younger brother with condescending pity, pretending to be the benevolent family patriarch while privately mocking Arthur’s rigid ethics. But when I had noticed the strange discrepancies in Brian’s corporate tax filings three weeks ago, Arthur was the first person I called.
Arthur hadn't just looked at the papers. He had wept with rage. For three solid weeks, while Brian thought he was executing a brilliant, clean break—planning to leave me penniless, stripped of my home, and blindsided by divorce papers served on an empty bank account—Arthur and I had been working fourteen-hour days. We had unraveled every shell company, traced every offshore routing number, and assembled a three-hundred-page evidentiary dossier that left zero room for ambiguity.
“Brian,” Vanessa said, her voice rising in shrill panic. She reached out, grabbing his arm and shaking him. “Brian, look at me! Is this true? Is the money frozen? What about the transfer to the Zurich account? The one that was supposed to clear at three?”
Brian didn't answer her. He was staring at me as if I were a ghost who had returned from the grave to drag him into the earth.
“There is no Zurich transfer, Vanessa,” I said kindly, turning my focus to her. “The money you thought was going to fund your new life in Scottsdale and your boutique agency? It was flagged as suspicious activity at eleven o'clock this morning. It’s sitting in an escrow suspense account under court supervision. And because your name is listed as the primary managing director on the Apex Horizon filings, you aren’t just Brian’s mistress anymore. You’re his co-conspirator in wire fraud exceeding one million dollars.”
Vanessa’s hand snapped back from Brian’s arm as if his skin had burst into flames. She stared at him with naked horror, the predatory elegance completely stripped away, leaving only the raw, frantic desperation of an accomplice realizing the ship was already under water.
