I went to the airport to say goodbye to my best friend and accidentally caught my husband kissing the woman he swore was “just a coworker.” But the affair wasn’t the worst part. I heard them laughing about taking my money, my house, and my entire life, never realizing I had just recorded the conversation that could destroy their plan.

Behind me, I could hear the muffled, frantic shouts of airport staff making the final call for passengers who would never board, and the quiet, solitary weeping of a man whose carefully constructed empire of lies had crumbled into dust in less than ten minutes.

Ahead of me, the glass doors of the terminal slid open into the crisp, high-altitude mountain air. The afternoon sun was setting over the Rockies, painting the snowcapped peaks in shades of brilliant gold and fiery crimson.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

I pulled it out as I walked toward the parking structure. It was a text message from Arthur.

‘Injunction granted in full. All accounts frozen. The Board voted unanimously five minutes ago: Brian is officially terminated for gross misconduct, effective immediately. The house is completely secure. We did it, Elena.’

I stopped beside my car, looking up at the wide, endless Colorado sky. For the first time in months, I took a deep, full breath of air that didn't feel tainted by suspicion, dread, or deceit.

I texted Arthur back:

‘Thank you, Arthur. Dinner’s on me tonight. At my house.’

I slipped the phone back into my pocket, unlocked the car door, and drove home to the life that was entirely, beautifully, and permanently mine.
