Chapter 1
PART 3
The first line of the document was almost boring.
VOLUNTARY RESIGNATION AND WAIVER OF GOVERNANCE RIGHTS.
I read it once.
Then again.
By the third time, my hands had stopped shaking.
According to the document, I was voluntarily resigning from the board of Reid’s company, surrendering my voting authority, waiving my right to challenge several pending transactions, and transferring temporary proxy control over shares held through my family’s investment structure.
At the bottom was a blank signature line.
My name was already typed beneath it.
Nora Bennett Hale.
My married name.
A name I had possessed for less than an hour.
“They prepared this before the wedding,” I whispered.
Mom stood beside me.
“Yes.”
I scrolled farther.
There was an acknowledgment stating that I had reviewed the document with independent counsel.

I didn’t.
And then I found the date.
Monday.
Two days after the wedding.
Suddenly, the entire weekend rearranged itself in my mind.
The honeymoon wasn’t scheduled to begin until Tuesday because Reid had insisted he needed Monday morning for “one final board matter.”
Camille had asked about paperwork while buttoning my wedding dress.
Reid had begged me for three days.
And four point eight million dollars was scheduled to leave the company Monday.
I looked at Mom.
