He gripped the halves together, tearing them across again, shredding the signatures, the waivers, the clauses about separate residences and non-consummation. He dropped the white scraps onto the floor, kicked them aside, and walked back to the sofa.

He sank to his knees beside me.

Grant Hale—the ruthless titan of Manhattan, the man who had intimidated senators and swallowed multi-billion-dollar conglomerates without blinking—was kneeling on the carpet, pressing his forehead into the edge of the mattress.

"What protocol, Nora?" he whispered, his voice trembling so violently it shocked me. "What did you see?"

I pulled my arm closer to my chest, guarded even now. "The email from Hale Family Counsel. Sent three weeks after you left in July. 'Succession and Custodial Contingency Protocol.' Stating that any child of our union would be surrendered to a Hale family residence, educated by corporate committees, managed like an acquisition." My voice broke. "It had your initials at the bottom. GH."

Grant's head snapped up.

His face was pale with a furious, sickening realization. "My father."

I blinked, confused.

"My father," Grant repeated, his teeth grinding together so hard his jaw muscles jumped. "He has an automated power of attorney through the family trust for legacy agreements drawn before my grandfather died. When our marriage hit the two-year mark, the firm triggered automatic reviews." He reached out, his hand hesitating in mid-air before resting gently on top of mine, desperate for contact. "Nora... look at me. Please. Look at me."

I turned my eyes to his. They were rimmed with red, wet with tears he refused to let fall.

"I didn't write that," he said, each word carved from sheer conviction. "I didn't see that email. I haven't spoken to my father's legal team since August because I told him if he touched Whitmore Systems or Hawthorne House again, I would strip him of his voting shares and remove him from the board."

I stared at him, my breath hitching. "You... you did what?"

"Why do you think I stayed away for thirteen weeks?" he asked, his voice breaking into a ragged confession. "Do you think I left your bed in July because it meant nothing to me?"

He bowed his head, resting his cheek against my knuckles.

"I left that morning because waking up beside you terrified me, Nora. For two years, I hid behind a contract because I told myself I couldn't afford to care about you. My father treated my mother like a merger until she had nothing left of her own. I swore I would never do that to a woman. And then that night happened. I held you, and I realized I had been in love with you since the day we exchanged vows in that Westchester chapel."
