"You can't destroy five years of marriage over a misunderstanding."

Then another.

"I know you're still angry about Vanessa, but none of that meant anything."

I read that last sentence three times.

None of that meant anything.

The sleepless nights.

The lies.

The money.

The humiliation.

All of it reduced to something insignificant.

I took screenshots and sent them to Laura.

Then I blocked the number.

## The Call I Never Expected

Two weeks later, my mother-in-law called my mother.

She wanted to speak to me.

My mother warned me before giving her my new number.

"Elena, you don't have to listen to her," she said.

But I agreed.

For years, I had tried to earn Margaret Parker's affection.

I never succeeded.

She always found something wrong with me.

I worked too much.

I didn't cook enough.

I hadn't given her grandchildren.

I didn't know how to understand her son.

When I answered the phone, I expected another lecture.

"Elena," Margaret said. "I need to ask you something."

"I'm listening."

"Is it true that Daniel used money from your savings to buy an apartment for that woman?"

Her voice sounded different.

There was no contempt.

Only exhaustion.

"Our attorneys are reviewing several financial transactions."

Margaret sighed.

"Daniel told me you sold the house to get revenge."

"It wasn't revenge."

"He also said you abandoned the marriage without giving him a chance to fix things."

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"He moved in with Vanessa, Margaret."

"I know."

Those two words froze me.

"You knew?"

"He told me when it all started. He said he needed to teach you to respect him."

Something inside me seemed to shut down.

Margaret had known her son was living with another woman.

And yet she had continued calling me, telling me I needed to be more understanding.

"Then I don't think we have much to talk about," I replied.

"Wait, please."

Her voice cracked.

"Elena, there's something I need to tell you."

I remained silent.

"I raised Daniel to believe he always deserved a second chance. Every time he did something wrong, I found an explanation. I always protected him."

I heard her take a shaky breath.

"I think I ended up teaching him that he would never have to face the consequences of his decisions."

I didn't know what to say.

Margaret continued.

"I'm not calling to ask you to take him back."
