Chapter 21
The financial investigation had led to a formal repayment arrangement for the losses he was responsible for, alongside other legal and financial steps recommended by the professionals involved.
Robert and Diane were still rebuilding their finances and their marriage.
Nicole and Derek had separated legally.
Their parenting arrangements had been established with professional guidance and safeguards intended to protect Tommy.
Derek was making progress.
But nobody was pretending the past hadn't happened.
He approached slowly.
“Claire?”
I nodded.
“Derek.”
He held out the box.
“I brought something.”
I looked at it.
“What is it?”
He opened the lid.
Inside was a small brass plaque.
I read the words.
STRENGTH IS NOT THE POWER TO HURT. IT IS THE COURAGE TO PROTECT.
Below the words was a tiny engraved butterfly.
I stared at it.
Derek cleared his throat.
“I've been working at a metal fabrication shop. Learning a trade. Staying busy.”
He looked uncomfortable.
“I made that after one of my counseling sessions.”
I touched the edge of the plaque.
“It's beautiful.”
He nodded.
“I thought maybe you could put it somewhere in the gym.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
He swallowed.
“Because Tommy told me something last week.”
“What?”
Derek's eyes filled.
“He said he used to think strong people were the ones everybody was afraid of.”
My chest tightened.
Derek continued.
“But now he thinks strong people are the ones who make everybody feel safe.”
I covered my mouth.
“He said he learned that from you.”
Derek looked down.
“I wish he'd learned it from me.”
I took a breath.
“He still has a lot of growing up to do, Derek.”
“I know.”
“And so do you.”
He nodded.
“I know that too.”
I looked at the plaque again.
Then smiled.
“Come inside.”
He blinked.
“What?”
“Help me hang it.”
His eyes widened.
“Are you sure?”
I nodded.
“It's a good message. And Tommy deserves to see adults practicing what they teach.”
We walked into the gym together.
Not as close friends.
Not as people who had forgotten the past.
But as two adults who understood that change, when it was real, deserved to be encouraged without abandoning boundaries.
We hung the plaque beside the purple door.
And for the first time, Derek stood inside my gym without trying to prove he was the strongest person in the room.
He simply stood quietly.
And smiled.
