Just one sentence.

You left once. You should have stayed gone.

She stared at the screen.

Then she showed Dante.

He did not become angry.

That frightened her more.

Because Dante angry was predictable.

Dante calm meant someone had crossed a line.

“Do you know who sent it?”

“Not yet.”

“What are you going to do?”

He looked at her.

The old Dante would have answered immediately.

The old Dante would have disappeared for hours and returned with the problem solved.

The new Dante paused.

“What do you want me to do?”

The question surprised her.

Because months ago, he would never have asked.

Isabella looked at him.

“I want to be part of the decision.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

And somehow, that mattered more than anything.

The person behind everything was discovered one week later.

Not an enemy family.

Not a rival.

Someone closer.

Someone who knew the Moretti household.

Someone who knew exactly how to create doubt.

Marco found the evidence first.

The person who had leaked security information was one of the estate employees.

A woman who had worked there for seven years.

When Dante confronted her, she admitted everything.

But the reason shocked them.

She had been paid by Lorenzo.

Not to destroy Dante.

To force him to become the man everyone expected him to be.

Cold.

Unreachable.

Alone.

Because Lorenzo believed a mafia leader with something to lose was dangerous.

But a mafia leader with nothing to lose was unstoppable.

Dante listened silently.

Then he did something nobody expected.

He did not punish her immediately.

He asked:

“Why?”

The woman cried.

“Because I thought you were becoming weak.”

Dante looked at Isabella.

Then back at her.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“You misunderstood.”

He reached for Isabella’s hand.

“The woman beside me is the reason I became stronger.”

For the first time, everyone in the room understood.

Isabella was not the thing Dante protected.

She was the person who changed him.

***

A year later, Isabella stood on the terrace where their first photograph had been taken.

The same terrace.

The same view.

A different woman.

Dante joined her.

“You’re thinking too loudly.”

She smiled.

“You still do that.”

“Do what?”

“Pretend you know what I’m thinking.”

“I usually do.”

She looked at him.

“Usually?”

He smiled.

“Not anymore.”

That answer made her laugh.

The sound filled the terrace.

The same laugh from the photograph.
