Chapter 21
I wore a simple black dress and my mother’s earrings.
Before the evening began, I visited the small table near the windows where a framed photograph of Eleanor had been placed beside a vase of white roses.
“I understand now,” I whispered.
Not everything. Some questions would remain unanswered. I would never know whether my mother had sensed the full shape of Julian’s deception or only the possibility of it.
But I knew what she had given me.
Not wealth.
Not protection from disappointment.
The freedom to face the truth and still choose what came next.
Malcolm approached with two glasses of sparkling water.
“You’re wearing them,” he said.
“Yes.”
“They suit you.”
I touched one lightly. “They belonged to my mother.”
“Then they’re exactly where they should be.”
Across the ballroom, employees were laughing beneath the blue lights. The company was not perfect, and neither was I. But the room no longer felt like a place where I had to prove who I was.
I had spent years believing that being underestimated was a kind of safety.
Now I understood that safety was not being unseen.
It was being known clearly—and choosing not to disappear.
