“Did she say anything about the trust?”

“She said she hoped you would someday learn the difference between being provided for and being free.”

The kitchen seemed to grow quieter.

Mrs. Pearl touched the lid of the box.

“Your mother loved you. She did not want you punished for what your father had done.”

“She left me the opposite of the truth.”

“She left you a chance to find it.”

I had no answer.

After she left, I went back to the office and placed a blank sheet of paper beneath the lamp.

For a long time, I wrote nothing.

Then I began.

Corinne,

I want to start by saying that I will not ask you to forgive me. You have already spent too many years doing that for me.

I stopped.

The sentence felt inadequate, but it was true.

I continued.

I have confused your patience with permission, your silence with peace, and the life I provided with the life we built together. I do not know whether our marriage can be repaired. I understand now that wanting it repaired is not the same as being worthy of another chance.

I wrote about the trust.

I wrote that I would place the assets under independent management and cooperate fully with the review. I wrote that I would not sell, transfer, or hide anything. I wrote that Owen’s security would come before my pride.

Then I wrote about Tessa.

Not the details.

Only the truth.

I betrayed you. I made promises I had no courage to keep and allowed another woman to believe she had a future with me while you were carrying our son. None of that happened because I was confused. It happened because I wanted comfort without consequences.

My pen paused.

Outside, the sky had cleared. A thin line of sunlight rested along the horizon.

I finished the letter near midnight.

Before placing it in an envelope, I added one final paragraph.

I am going to learn what my father concealed, but I will not use the truth about him to excuse the truth about me. Whatever happens to the house, the trust, or our marriage, I will take responsibility for the choices that brought us here. If you decide there is no future for us, I will still become someone Owen can trust.

I signed my name.

Then I placed the letter beside the documents Miriam had given me.
