Chapter 20
“I will.”
“And tell him Dominic approves of the wedding.”
Dominic looked at her.
“I approve of you making your own decisions.”
Vanessa smiled.
“That’s close enough.”
She moved toward the door, then turned back.
“What will you do with the letter?”
I looked down at my mother’s words.
“I’ll keep it.”
“And the notebook?”
“I’ll make copies.
Then I’ll give the original to the lawyer.”
Dominic nodded.
Outside, dawn had begun to lighten the windows.
The city was still gray, but the darkness was thinning.
I walked toward the study doors with the letter tucked safely inside my coat.
At the threshold, Dominic came beside me.
Not in front.
Not behind.
Beside me.
“Naomi,” he said.
I turned.
“I’m sorry I made you invisible.”
The apology was simple.
No explanation followed it.
No request that I make him feel better.
I believed him.
“You didn’t make me invisible,” I said.
“You just failed to look closely.”
His eyes held mine.
“I’m looking now.”
“Then keep looking.”
“I will.”
He reached for my hand, pausing before touching me.
I gave him my fingers.
The warmth of his palm closed around mine.
Behind us, the King family’s secrets waited in boxes, ledgers, and torn pages.
Ahead of us were lawyers, questions, and truths that might never be complete.
But my father had not abandoned me.
My mother had loved me.
Vanessa had chosen her own life.
And Dominic, at last, had chosen honesty over fear.
For the first time in years, the future did not feel like an empty page waiting for someone else to write on it.
It felt like a sketch beneath my hand—unfinished, uncertain, and entirely mine.
