Chapter 11
Both laughing as flower petals fell around them.
Adrian stared at the picture for a long time.
Then he noticed something.
Claire wasn't wearing the enormous diamond he had once bought her.
She wore a smaller ring.
And she looked happier than she ever had in their engagement photographs.
For a moment, the old instinct returned.
Jealousy.
Anger.
The desire to prove that Nathan had simply taken something that belonged to him.
But he stopped.
Because Claire had never belonged to him.
That had been his mistake from the beginning.
He had treated her love like a permanent asset.
Something secure.
Something he could neglect while chasing everything else.
And by the time he understood that love required attention, she had already learned to live without him.
Adrian opened an old drawer.
The engagement ring was still there.
He picked it up.
Once, he had believed its price was proof of how much he loved her.
Now he understood that a diamond could not replace presence.
He closed the box.
Then, for the first time, he wished Claire happiness without secretly hoping she would return.
Two years later, Claire stood in the kitchen of the home she and Nathan had purchased together.
Sunlight poured through enormous windows.
Windows she had designed herself.
On the refrigerator were photographs of family vacations, Oliver sleeping upside down, and Nathan proudly holding a burnt birthday cake.
And in the living room, their six-month-old daughter, Sophie, was giggling in her father's arms.
Nathan was making ridiculous faces.
Sophie laughed so hard she hiccupped.
Claire stood in the doorway watching them.
Sometimes happiness still surprised her.
Not because her life was perfect.
It wasn't.
There were sleepless nights.
Work deadlines.
Arguments over whose turn it was to walk Oliver.
Moments of exhaustion.
But there was no fear beneath any of it.
No feeling that one disagreement could make Nathan disappear for days.
No uncertainty about whether she mattered.
Nathan noticed her watching.
“What?”
Claire shook her head.
“Nothing.”
He smiled.
“That's a suspicious nothing.”
She walked toward him.
He shifted Sophie into one arm and wrapped the other around Claire.
“You okay?”
Claire looked at her daughter.
Then at her husband.
And she thought about the afternoon five days before her wedding to Adrian.
The seating chart.
The phone call.
The ring in his palm.
The elevator descending while he waited for her to come back.
