Chapter 6
Downstairs, twelve women rose as Claire entered the conference room.
One woman in her sixties clutched a yellow legal pad to her chest as if someone might still tell her she had arrived too late.
Claire knew that feeling.
“Please sit,” she said.
“You’re not here because anyone gave you permission to begin.
You’re here because you finally stopped waiting for it.”
The woman smiled.
Claire looked around the table at faces shaped by work, grief, responsibility, reinvention, and the kind of courage that rarely made magazine covers.
She remembered the broken champagne glass, Sophie’s victorious whisper, and Daniel’s certainty that applause and ownership were the same thing.
They were not.
Power was not the loudest voice in the room.
It was knowing what you had built, what you would protect, and when you were finally willing to put your own name on the door.
Claire opened her folder.
“All right,” she said.
“Let’s get to work.”
THE END.
