“Help us bring him home,” I said.

She nodded through tears.

“I will.”

THE CHAPEL AT MIDNIGHT

The old Reynolds chapel stood beyond a grove of snow-covered pine trees.

It had been built decades earlier by Daniel's grandfather.

Tonight, its stained-glass windows glowed faintly beneath the winter moon.

Police vehicles remained out of sight while officers established a safe perimeter.

I did not enter alone.

A trained negotiator handled the contact, and I waited nearby with Evelyn.

At eleven fifty-eight, Charles called.

“You brought the police.”

I answered calmly.

“You brought a child into this.”

“You don't understand.”

“Then help me understand. Let Elijah leave.”

“He's my son!”

Evelyn covered her mouth.

I looked toward the chapel.

“Charles, if you love him, don't make him pay for what you've done.”

There was a long silence.

Then Charles said, “He doesn't know anything.”

“Then let him stay that way tonight. Let him go somewhere warm, with people he trusts.”

Inside the chapel, a door opened.

A small figure appeared.

Red coat.

Dark hair.

Gray eyes.

Elijah.

He stood on the steps, frightened and uncertain.

Evelyn began crying.

“Elijah!”

The boy looked toward her.

Then toward me.

For one suspended moment, nobody moved.

Finally, he ran.

Straight into Evelyn's arms.

I remained where I was.

Because as desperately as I wanted to hold him, I understood something important.

He had just survived a terrifying night.

He needed the person who had always made him feel safe.

Evelyn hugged him tightly.

Then she whispered something into his ear.

Elijah slowly turned toward me.

“Are you Kesha?”

I nodded.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

He approached carefully.

Up close, I could see the familiar shape of his eyes.

The little dimple in his left cheek.

The same expression Noah made when he was trying not to cry.

“Are you going to take me away from Evelyn?”

The question nearly shattered me.

I crouched in front of him.

“Not tonight. And nobody is going to make you choose between people you love.”

His lower lip trembled.

“Promise?”

“I promise I'll listen to you and do everything I can to keep you safe.”

He studied my face.

Then slowly held out his hand.

I took it.

And somewhere behind us, police officers entered the chapel.

Charles Whitcomb was taken into custody without further confrontation.

He did not look at Elijah.

But Elijah watched him disappear.

And whispered, “Why did he lie to me?”
