He thought about that.

Then smiled.

“I'm glad you ran.”

I held him tightly.

“So am I.”

A moment later, the other four children came rushing into the room.

“Mom! Family picture!”

I laughed.

“Already?”

“Everybody has to be in it!” Olivia announced.

Daniel stood beside the Christmas tree.

Evelyn joined us.

Rebecca held the camera.

The children crowded around me.

Elijah squeezed between Noah and Sophia.

And just before the photograph was taken, he reached for my hand.

I looked down.

He smiled.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Now nobody's missing.”

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then I looked at all five of my children.

At the faces I had loved from their first breaths.

At the boy I had searched for without knowing he existed.

At the family we had rebuilt from secrets, betrayal, and impossible pain.

And I finally understood something.

For years, I had believed the greatest victory would be watching Daniel regret abandoning us.

But I was wrong.

The greatest victory was standing in my own home, surrounded by five healthy, laughing children who knew they were wanted.

It was watching Elijah blow out birthday candles.

Hearing him call me Mom.

Knowing he would never again have to wonder whether someone was coming for him.

Daniel had lost eight years.

Charles had lost his freedom.

The Reynolds family had lost the perfect reputation they had protected at everyone else's expense.

But my children had gained the truth.

And I had gained the one thing I never knew was missing.

My fifth child.

Rebecca raised the camera.

“Everybody smile!”

Five little faces turned toward the lens.

Five pairs of gray eyes sparkled beneath the Christmas lights.

And just before the flash, Elijah whispered:

“Best Christmas ever.”

I smiled.

Because this time, there were no missing children.

No unanswered questions about who belonged.

No secrets powerful enough to keep us apart.

Only the beautiful, imperfect family we had fought to become.

THE END.
