Chapter 6
"I don't expect you to forgive me," Dante whispered. "I know what I took from you. I took your choices. I let you think you were disposable because I was too terrified to tell you that my father had put a price on our freedom. I thought if you hated me, you would leave Chicago, build a clean, beautiful life, and never look back at the filth of my world."
"And you thought that gave you the right to lie to me for eight years?" I asked, stepping toward him, my voice trembling with suppressed fury. "You watched me cry on my twenty-fifth birthday because you wouldn't move in with me. You watched me ask you why we couldn't take a vacation without private security. You let me believe I wasn't enough to stand beside you!"
"You were too good to stand beside me!" Dante choked out, stepping forward, his hands trembling as he reached out, stopping just inches from touching my arms. "Elena, look at what my family is! My uncle is doing twenty years in federal prison. My cousin Marco was indicted twice for extortion. If my father had known you were the leverage to control me, you would have become a target the second we announced an engagement! Victoria knew how to survive that world because she didn't care about me. She didn't have a heart in the game. But you... you would have died in that house."
"And instead, I almost broke in Switzerland," I whispered, tears spilling down my cheeks. "I had a baby alone in a foreign hospital, Dante. I held our son while nurses spoke to me in German, wondering how a man who held me for eight years could marry my sister three weeks after I left. Do you have any idea what that loneliness feels like?"
Dante dropped to his knees.
The sight was so shocking it took the breath from my chest. Dante Moretti—a man who commanded boardrooms, whose surname made politicians sweat in the Midwest—fell to his knees on the carpet before me. He buried his face in his hands, his broad shoulders shaking violently as a ragged, agonizing sob tore out of his chest.
"I didn't know," he wept, his voice muffled against his palms. "I swear to God on my life, Elena, I didn't know you were carrying him. If I had known... I would have burned my father's empire to the ground. I would have walked away with nothing. I would have followed you to the ends of the earth."
