Chapter 7
He looked up at me, his face wet with tears, completely undone.
"I don't ask for your love," he pleaded, reaching out to grasp the hem of my skirt like a penitent at an altar. "I have no right to ask for a second of your life. But please... don't make me be a ghost to him. Don't punish him for my sins. Let me give him everything. Let me protect him."
Before I could answer, a small, sleepy voice drifted from the doorway of the bedroom.
"Mommy?"
PART 7: Gray Eyes
Dante froze instantly, his breath hitching in his throat.
I turned around. Leo was standing by the doorframe, rubbing his eyes with his fist. He was wearing his favorite yellow pajamas patterned with little green dinosaurs, clutching his battered blue car in his other hand. His dark curls were a messy halo around his head.
He blinked against the lamp light, his gaze shifting from me down to the grown man kneeling on the floor.
Leo didn't run away. Children have an uncanny instinct for genuine grief. Instead, he took three hesitant steps forward, his little bare feet padding softly on the carpet. He stopped two feet away from Dante and tilted his head.
"Why are you crying, mister?" Leo asked softly, his little voice filled with pure, uncorrupted innocence. "Did you lose your toy?"
Dante couldn't speak. He pressed a hand against his mouth, his chest heaving, his gray eyes—the exact mirror image of Leo’s—staring at the child in front of him with an expression of reverence so absolute it broke my heart into pieces.
"He's just... feeling a little sad right now, Leo," I said gently, wiping my own tears and kneeling beside my son.
Leo looked down at his blue car. He turned it over in his small fingers, studying the chipped paint on the wheels. Then, with the unprompted generosity that only a toddler possesses, he held the car out toward Dante.
"You can hold it," Leo offered seriously. "It makes you go vroom. Then you don't cry."
Dante let out a ragged, trembling laugh that caught in his throat. With infinite care, as if he were handling spun glass that might shatter under the slightest pressure, he reached out his large, scarred hand and let the tiny plastic car rest in his palm.
"Thank you," Dante whispered, his voice shaking violently. "It's... it's a very fast car."
