Chapter 12
Then another image.
A file open on a computer screen.
Claire’s medical records.
The twins’ birth certificates.
And beneath them, an unfinished email addressed to a celebrity news site.
Claire went pale.
“What is she doing?”
Vincent stared at the screen.
The answer arrived before he could speak.
A fourth message appeared.
She copied the files. We stopped the email, but there’s a bigger problem.
Vincent typed immediately.
What problem?
Ethan’s reply came seconds later.
Vincent read it once.
Then again.
Claire watched every trace of color disappear from his face.
“What?”
He slowly looked at her.
“Vanessa wasn’t the only person intercepting your messages.”
Claire froze.
“What are you talking about?”
Vincent turned the phone around.
There was a name on the screen.
A name Claire recognized instantly.
A name that made her grip Noah’s crib so hard her knuckles turned white.
Because that person hadn’t worked for Vincent.
That person had worked for her.
And according to Ethan’s records, they had been quietly sending information about Claire’s pregnancy to someone inside the Moretti organization for more than a year.
Claire whispered one word.
“No.”
Vincent’s phone rang.
Ethan.
Vincent answered.
“What did you find?”
Ethan spoke for less than thirty seconds.
Vincent’s expression became darker with every word.
Then he looked at Claire.
Not with anger.
With disbelief.
When the call ended, Claire could barely force out the question.
“Who were they sending it to?”
Vincent stared at her.
Then he said the one name neither of them expected.
“My mother.”
