Chapter 13
Her face tightened.
“You think money makes you untouchable?”
“No,” I said. “Documentation does.”
A flash of fear crossed her eyes.
There it was.
Not guilt.
Recognition.
She knew enough.
Before she could answer, Chase appeared at the end of the corridor.
Perfect.
“Sloane?” he called, too loudly. “Are you okay?”
She turned toward him and broke.
It was impressive, honestly.
Her shoulders shook. One hand flew to her mouth. She stumbled back as if I had struck her with a word.
“I can’t,” she sobbed. “I can’t do this.”
Chase rushed to her.
“What did you say to her?” he demanded.
I did not answer.
The corridor had filled behind him. Donors. Staff. A photographer. Lila Van Doren, nearly glowing with purpose.
Sloane pressed her face against Chase’s chest.
“She said you spent her,” she cried. “She said she has documentation. She keeps following us. Chase, I’m scared.”
And he did it.
He gave me the scene.
His face hardened with noble fury. He turned, lifted his voice, and accused me in front of everyone.
“You cannot keep stalking us, Evelyn.”
The sentence struck the marble and multiplied.
Someone whispered, “Stalking?”
Chase raised his hand as if asking the room for patience.
“I have tried to handle this privately. I have tried to protect her dignity. But my wife has appeared in Aspen, Palm Beach, and now here. Everywhere Sloane and I have gone for recovery work, she appears. She corners her. She threatens her. This has to stop.”
Sloane cried against his lapel.
“She just wants to heal,” he said.
A phone camera rose.
Then another.
My humiliation entered the internet in real time.
Good.
I stood under the corridor lights, my black satin gown pooling at my feet, and felt something inside me become perfectly quiet.
There had been nights I wanted to scream. Nights I sat on the bathroom floor with my hand over my mouth so Maribel would not hear. Nights I looked at wedding photos and tried to locate the exact version of myself who had mistaken being needed for being loved.
But now?
Now I felt clean.
Chase mistook that calm for shock.
His voice softened.
“Evelyn, please. Let us help you.”
That line was the one.
The one Cecilia needed.
The one Julian had predicted.
The one that turned cruelty into defamation with witnesses and video.
I looked at him and smiled faintly.
