Chapter 23
Rebecca moved first.
“You’re alive.”
Elena gave a tired smile.
“Disappointing, I imagine.”
Rebecca’s face crumpled. “I thought you were dead.”
“I allowed people to think that.”
Alexander stared at her.
“You used my credentials.”
“Yes.”
“You redirected Claire’s letters.”
“Yes.”
“You prepared the documents that took Ethan from her.”
Elena closed her eyes briefly.
“Yes.”
The truth landed without spectacle.
I felt no desire to shout. I had spent too many years imagining this moment, and reality was quieter than revenge.
“Why?” I asked.
Elena looked at me.
“Because I believed your removal would prevent a larger disaster.”
“That is not an answer.”
“No,” she said. “It is the excuse I used to sleep.”
She walked to the desk and opened a folder.
“Your father-in-law had been diverting money from Russo Global for years. He was building a private network outside the company—ports, security contracts, freight routes. Daniel discovered it and planned to expose him.”
“Rook,” Alexander said.
Elena nodded.
“Rook was not one person. It was a name used by the network. Your father-in-law was its administrator, but others benefited. Politicians, contractors, men inside the company.”
“Why involve me?”
“Because Daniel needed you to inherit a portion of the voting shares if he was removed.”
Alexander stiffened.
“Daniel had shares?”
“Held in trust for you. Your father-in-law feared that if the board learned Daniel intended to transfer them, his control would end.”
I looked at Alexander.
“So he made it appear that I was part of the financial scheme.”
“And made Rebecca accuse you,” Elena said. “He knew Alexander would protect the family name before he protected his own marriage.”
Rebecca folded her arms tightly.
“What about my father?”
“Daniel was trying to protect him too. Your father had discovered that Rook was using Hale accounts. He planned to confront the board.”
“Did Rook kill him?”
Elena’s face tightened.
“I don’t know. I know your father’s car was tampered with before the accident. The brakes were inspected afterward by a mechanic who had been paid through one of the shell companies.”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
I reached for her hand.
She took it.
Elena continued.
“After Daniel died, your father-in-law accelerated the plan. He ordered the false evidence, the custody papers, and the letter interceptions. I helped him because I believed that if Alexander stayed in control, the company could be stabilized.”
“You destroyed my life to save the company,” I said.
