Chapter 29
“Your decision.”
That mattered.
More than I expected.
Mrs. Chen printed the archive log.
Six pages.
Richard had accessed Margaret Vance’s records seventeen times between 2018 and 2020.
Then the visits stopped.
I met Richard in 2021.
Dana laid the pages side by side.
“Look at the last entry.”
The final access was dated November 14, 2020.
Material removed:
Box M-17.
Beneficiary correspondence.
One year later, Richard met me.
My heart thudded.
“What was in M-17?”
Mrs. Chen searched the catalog.
Her face changed.
“According to the original inventory…”
She looked at Alexander.
“It contained Margaret Vance’s beneficiary ledger.”
No one moved.
The ledger Thomas had told Alexander to find.
The ledger that could connect my father to the missing trust money.
Richard had taken it before he ever met me.
“Why would he marry me?” I whispered.
Dana looked at the prenup copy on her tablet.
Then at me.
“Maybe the marriage wasn’t the end goal.”
My mouth went dry.
“What was?”
She didn’t answer.
Alexander walked to the window.
For once, he looked as lost as I felt.
Then Mrs. Chen said, “There is one more thing.”
She pointed to the authorization form.
“Richard didn’t remove Box M-17 alone.”
My heart stopped.
“There was a second authorized person.”
Dana stepped forward.
“Who?”
Mrs. Chen enlarged the signature field.
The name was handwritten, but perfectly clear.
I had never seen it before.
Alexander had.
I knew because his entire expression changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“Who is that?” I asked.
He stared at the signature.
Then at me.
When he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.
“Clara…”
His hand tightened around his cane.
“That is the name of my older brother.”
I stared at him.
“You have a brother?”
Alexander did not answer immediately.
And in that silence, I understood the answer was worse than the question.
Finally, he said:
“I did.”
The archive room seemed to tilt.
“What happened to him?”
Alexander looked again at the signature beside Richard Sterling’s.
“My family buried his name thirty years ago.”
I felt my baby move beneath my hand.
“And why,” I asked, “was a man your family erased helping my husband steal records about me before Richard and I ever met?”
Alexander looked at me with a fear I had not seen before.
“That,” he said, “may be the question your mother was trying to lead us to from the beginning.”
