She flipped to page four, her eyes scanning the text. She found the signature block on page six.

Her hand was steady, but her pen dug hard into the paper, leaving an impression that would be visible three sheets down.

She signed all three copies.

She slid two of them back to me and kept the third.

“You have your agreement, Harold,” she said, her voice dropping into a register that was almost completely devoid of emotion. “Now reconnect the facility.”

I reached into my briefcase, pulled out my battered ThinkPad—the one with the scratched magnesium lid and the faded asset tag from five years ago—and opened it. I didn’t need the company’s guest Wi-Fi. I flipped the toggle on my dedicated cellular uplink card.

The screen lit up with three terminal windows. White text streaming against a dark background.

At the bottom of the center window, a message was flashing in amber:

[WARN] TENANT_DEAUTH: ID_WHITMAN_MFG_01

[WARN] RUNTIME_BRIDGE_SEVERED: T-MINUS 01:21:14 UNTIL CACHE EXPIRATION

My fingers moved across the mechanical keyboard with the ease of someone playing an old hymn on an upright piano.

I entered my sixteen-character administrative passkey, followed by the secondary hardware token hanging from my keyring.

auth --override --tenant WHITMAN_MFG_01 --license-tier PAS_ENT_DIRECT_V5

bridge --restore-sync --all-nodes --reconcile-clock

I hit the Enter key.

For three seconds, the terminal paused. Then the lines of text began to cascade downward in green, scrolling so fast they became a blur of hex addresses and timing registers.

[INFO] HANDSHAKE_ACCEPTED: NODE_BAY_01_PRESSES ... OK

[INFO] HANDSHAKE_ACCEPTED: NODE_BAY_04_WELD_CELLS ... OK

[INFO] HANDSHAKE_ACCEPTED: NODE_BAY_09_PAINT_LINE ... OK

[INFO] TELEMETRY_STREAM_STABLE: 184 NODES SYNCHRONIZED

[INFO] CACHE_EXPIRATION_COUNTER_RESET

I closed the laptop lid with a soft, definitive click.

I looked at the clock on the wall. 9:41 AM.

“The bridge is restored,” I said. “The buffers have re-synced. Your line will run without interruption.”

Olivia Matthews didn’t look at the screen. She didn’t look at Marcus. She picked up her tablet, slid it into her leather portfolio, and stood up.

“Our legal department will review the executed copies this afternoon, Mr. Peterson,” she said, her tone professional, distant, and completely impersonal.

“They’ve already reviewed it, Ms. Matthews,” I told her, rising from my chair and picking up my leather folder and my ThinkPad. “George Whitman’s general counsel retired two years ago, but his deputy, Tom Bradley, is still your Senior Vice President of Legal Affairs. I had coffee with him on Sunday morning. He helped me draft the transition terms on page four.”
