Chapter 29
I traced the raised line beneath my shoulder.
Once, Preston had called it repulsive.
Cassidy had called it deformity.
For five years, I had allowed their words to follow me everywhere.
Into dressing rooms.
Into meetings.
Into my marriage.
Into my dreams.
But their disgust had never been the truth about me.
It had been the truth about them.
I turned away from the mirror and walked toward the window.
The city lights glimmered against the dark water.
Somewhere out there, Preston was living with the consequences of his choices.
Cassidy was facing a future that hadn't unfolded the way she expected.
And Gideon was probably still in his office, making decisions that kept half of Wall Street awake at night.
Their lives would continue.
So would mine.
For the first time in years, that thought didn't frighten me.
I was no longer waiting for my husband to look at me with love.
I was no longer waiting for him to apologize before allowing myself to be happy.
I was no longer waiting for someone to declare that my scars were acceptable.
I had already made that decision.
My husband thought he had given me everything.
His last name.
His status.
A place beside him in photographs.
He thought losing those things would destroy me.
But on the night of the gala, I discovered how little they had ever been worth compared with the life I had almost lost saving him.
He called me a monster because he couldn't bear to look at what I had sacrificed.
I walked into that ballroom because I was finally brave enough to look at myself.
And when the marriage ended, I didn't lose the woman I had once been.
I found the woman he had spent five years trying to hide.
The scars were still there.
The woman who carried them was finally free.
