Chapter 24
"I guess we did," I whispered.
"I am so sorry."
"I know."
"I wish I could undo it."
"I know."
He breathed unevenly.
"I'm not asking you to come back."
"Okay."
"I just needed somebody who remembered what this place was before I ruined it."
I closed my eyes.
"You didn't ruin all of it."
He became quiet.
"We had good years."
"Yeah."
"They happened."
"Yeah."
"They don't have to disappear just because we're done."
I heard him crying then.
Quietly.
I cried too.
For a few minutes, neither of us pretended that healing required contempt.
Then I said, "You should go home, Adrian."
He inhaled.
"Home."
"Your new place."
"Right."
"You'll get used to saying it."
"Did you?"
I looked around my bedroom.
At the lamp I chose.
The book on my nightstand.
The cardigan hanging from the chair.
My life.
"Yes," I said.
"I did."
PART 1 — My Husband Brought His Mistress Home for the Weekend
The sale of Unit 2304 closed on a Thursday morning.
I signed the final papers electronically from my office.
At eleven seventeen, an email confirmed the transfer.
Just like that, the condo belonged to someone else.
No music swelled.
No one applauded.
I had a meeting at eleven thirty.
I went to it.
That evening, though, I drove to the marina.
I had not planned to.
My car simply turned toward the waterfront after work.
Maybe some endings need a location.
The sun was low when I arrived.
I parked across from the building and walked along the promenade.
The marina was busy with early summer activity.
People carried bags of ice toward boats.
A father crouched beside a little boy near the railing, pointing toward ducks in the water.
Someone on a nearby balcony was playing music.
Unit 2304 caught the light high above me.
I wondered whether the new owners were there.
Maybe the pregnant wife was standing at the windows imagining a crib.
Maybe they were eating takeout on the floor because their furniture had not arrived.
I hoped so.
That surprised me.
I expected jealousy.
Instead, I wanted the place to become a home again.
Just not mine.
"Thought that might be you."
I turned.
Martin stood several yards away, wearing his dark suit and name badge.
He must have stepped outside during a break.
"Hi."
"Closing today?"
I smiled.
"How did you know?"
"Mr. Mercer returned his keys this morning."
