It wasn't yet, but I kept it.

The next morning, I contacted a family-law attorney named Celia Grant.

Her assistant scheduled a video consultation so I could stay home with Lucy.

Celia listened, asked questions, and let me pause when the baby needed me.

She wanted statements, dates, information about our condo, and a list of current expenses.

She didn't promise to punish Garrett.

She told me what needed to be understood before I made decisions.

When I mentioned that he was pressuring me to shorten my leave, she asked whether I had approved any of the payments.

“No.”

“Keep the messages about the savings balance. And don't sign anything about property until we review it.”

After the call, I found an old conversation about childcare.

Garrett had told me daycare would eat my paycheck.

The estimate I'd obtained was expensive, but it wouldn't have come close to taking all of it. When I showed him the calculation, he said I was turning motherhood into an accounting exercise.

I had stopped discussing it.

Now I sat with the spreadsheet open and understood how expensive my silence might have become.

“What do you want?” Mom asked.

“I want to go back to work when I'm ready.”

“Then we plan for that.”

I told her I couldn't ask her to spend her retirement fixing my marriage.

She touched the edge of the bassinet.

“You can ask me for help. We'll decide together what help I can give.”

It was the kind of conversation Garrett kept avoiding: honest, ordinary, with limits both people were allowed to have.

Later, Celia sent a short follow-up question.

Had anyone helped Garrett arrange the second household?

I was typing that I didn't know when Mom's doorbell rang.

Doreen stood on the porch.

Under her arm was a folder thick enough to bend at the spine.

Doreen stepped inside before Mom finished opening the door.

She carried a department-store bag along with the folder.

“I brought clothes for Lucy.”

“Thank you,” I said.

She looked toward the bassinet, then at me.

“You look tired.”

“I am.”

“Well, that's what happens when you let yourself get worked up.”
