MY HUSBAND TEXTED HIS MISTRESS WHILE I WAS GIVING BIRTH—THEN I FOUND THE NURSERY HE BUILT WITH OUR SAVINGS

The reserve had been full in December. The withdrawals began soon afterward.

The apartment was arranged before the birth. The nursery delivery came during the class Garrett had missed.

And the proposed agreement described the money as having been paid to me.

“These are different issues,” Celia said. “We need to keep the facts clear.”

I wanted somebody to look at all of it and tell me I had been wronged.

She did.

Then she helped me work out what could actually be done.

We filed for divorce. We sought temporary financial arrangements and a parenting plan that would give Lucy stability while the case moved forward.

Garrett called after he received the papers.

“You're making this permanent.”

“You made decisions before I knew there was a decision to make.”

“We could go to counseling.”

“I need you to answer the financial questions.”

He said he would.

Then he said the spending was for both households.

Celia asked for the records supporting that claim.

He couldn't produce them.

Doreen called Mom.

I heard Mom's half of the conversation from the hallway.

“No, I didn't hire her an attorney. Audrey hired her own.”

A pause.

“She is capable of making decisions.”

Another pause.

“I am not discussing my daughter's case with you.”

Mom ended the call and stood by the kitchen counter for a moment.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“That I'm putting ideas in your head.”

I looked at the spreadsheet I'd made, the nursing pillow beside my chair, the stack of bills waiting to be paid.

“I wish the ideas were something fun.”

Mom laughed.

Then I did.

There were other days when nothing was funny.

Garrett asked for a parenting schedule that didn't fit his working hours. He said his mother could do the pickups.

I said I wanted him involved in Lucy's care, but we needed a plan he could actually follow.

Celia helped keep that conversation focused on Lucy.

I wrote down feeding information, appointments, and the times Garrett visited. When he arrived, I let him do the work.

He learned where the diapers were. He learned how she liked to be held after a bottle.

Sometimes he looked at me as though these ordinary tasks were an invitation back into our marriage.

I kept talking about Lucy.

At one appointment, he said Doreen wanted to visit more often.

“She can ask me,” I said.
