Chapter 15
The exact structure Carlo later copied.
Vittorio had framed Lucia to protect himself.
And Carlo had eventually discovered what his father had done.
Instead of exposing it, he had continued it.
There was only one question left.
Who had put the photograph in our bedroom?
The answer arrived the following morning.
Lucia did.
Not personally.
Through a man named Anthony Serra.
An old Moretti guard who had served Lucia decades earlier.
He still possessed a master credential tied to her old security profile.
Lucia had learned about my accusation through newspapers and family gossip.
Then she learned Carlo had been exposed.
She realized the pattern matched what had happened to her.
So she sent the photograph.
Not to threaten me.
To force Dante to uncover the truth.
When Dante learned that, he sat silently for several minutes.
Then he laughed once.
“My mother broke into my house to make a point.”
I looked at Lucia.
“I understand where he gets it now.”
For the first time, she smiled.
---
Two months later, Lucia Moretti returned home.
Not quietly.
Dante insisted on holding a family dinner.
Same dining room.
Same salon.
Same velvet case.
I knew what he was doing the moment I saw it.
Every member of the Moretti family was present.
Dante stood beside me.
Lucia entered last.
Sophia began crying immediately.
Several older relatives went white.
One man actually dropped his glass.
Lucia walked into the center of the salon.
Dante picked up the velvet case.
He opened it.
Inside was the sapphire necklace.
The same necklace Carlo had once planted in my bag.
Dante removed it.
Then walked to his mother.
“For eleven years,” he said, “this family allowed a lie to become history.”
Nobody moved.
“My mother was accused of stealing from us.”
Lucia watched him.
“She was innocent.”
Sophia lowered her head.
Dante continued.
“And when another innocent woman was accused in this same room, we nearly repeated the same mistake.”
His hand found mine.
“I nearly repeated my father’s mistake.”
He did not hide from it.
That mattered.
He looked around the room.
“This family used to believe loyalty meant silence.”
His gaze moved from face to face.
“It doesn’t.”
Then he placed the sapphire necklace in Lucia’s hands.
“This belonged to you.”
Lucia looked down at it.
“No.”
Everyone froze.
She walked toward me.
Then placed the necklace around my neck.
I stared at her.
