Chapter 18
“You deserved it.”
“I know.”
There was no defensiveness when he said it anymore.
Only truth.
I looked around the room.
At Lucia laughing with her granddaughter.
At Sophia arguing with Katarina near the windows.
At Marco pretending not to steal cookies from the tray.
At Dante beside me.
This family would never be ordinary.
There would always be secrets.
Old enemies.
Complicated loyalties.
And probably far too many security cameras.
But there was one thing the Moretti family would never do again.
They would never confuse accusation with truth.
Because hanging inside Dante’s private office was not a portrait of his father.
He had removed that years ago.
In its place was a simple black frame.
Inside it were two things.
My original verification request that had exposed Carlo’s theft.
And beneath it, the photograph Lucia had sent us.
At the bottom was a small brass plate.
It contained only seven words.
WHEN SOMEONE YOU LOVE ASKS, ANSWER THEM.
Dante read those words every day.
He never forgot them.
Neither did I.
Because the night I left his ring beside the stolen necklace, I thought I was walking away from Dante Moretti forever.
I wasn't.
I was walking away from the man he had been.
And when I finally returned, I came back to the man he had chosen to become.
That was the only version of him I could love.
And it was the only version worthy of keeping the ring.
