Chapter 14
I thought that might finally end the meeting. Instead, Grant offered to cover our documented wedding losses and make a public statement correcting Avery's claim.
There was a condition.
The company had to stop examining Northline's payments.
Linnea asked him to put the complete proposal in writing. After a discussion with his attorney, he sent it that afternoon.
Reed read it once and passed it back.
"Correcting a lie isn't something we buy from you."
For the first time since the dinner, Grant had no prepared answer.
He had expected us to pay for the truth with our silence. Instead, his offer became another document in the file.

PART 7 — THE APOLOGY THAT COULDN'T BUY SILENCE
Our correction went to the guests before the accountants finished their final report.
It established what we already knew: the man in Avery's video was Grant, the entrance had been staged, and Reed had been at the medical center with his mother at the relevant time.
The company was separately reviewing payments. We did not speculate about findings that had not yet been completed.
Reed's private diagnosis stayed private. He did not have to expose his medical history to strangers to earn the right to be believed about something disproved by other evidence.
Avery provided a signed correction through her attorney. She withdrew the claim that Reed had been involved with her and acknowledged that the pregnancy was not his.
Several guests apologized immediately. Others sent long explanations about how convincing the video had looked.
I thanked the people whose apologies did not require me to comfort them. I left the rest unanswered until I could read them without anger directing my response.
One message came from a woman who had worked with my mother years earlier.
I should have come and stood beside you. I froze. I'm sorry.
She didn't ask whether the wedding would still happen. She asked whether she could bring dinner on Tuesday.
I said yes.
The original clip continued circulating in places we could not immediately reach. Wendy helped us send the correction to people who had posted it, and several replaced or removed their versions.
Some strangers preferred the accusation. I learned that an explanation could be accurate without making every audience fair.
