Chapter 14
She had been afraid of this day long before she knew I was coming.
PART 1 — They Paid Me Twelve Million Dollars to Disappear
The wedding did not continue.
There was no dramatic announcement canceling it.
No one needed one.
Guests were quietly moved toward the cocktail terrace while the immediate family went inside.
Rebecca urged me to leave with the children.
I almost did.
Then Julian asked me to stay.
Not for him.
“For fifteen minutes,” he said. “Please. I need to understand what is happening.”
I looked at Rebecca.
She nodded reluctantly.
Rachel took the children into a breakfast room with snacks and coloring books.
The triplets remained with their nanny in another part of the house.
Then six adults gathered in the same library where Charles had once bought my absence.
The symmetry wasn't lost on anyone.
Charles stood behind his desk.
Margaret sat stiffly on the sofa.
Julian remained near the windows.
Vanessa refused to sit.
I stayed beside Rebecca.
Charles spoke first.
“Vanessa, explain your reaction outside.”
“There is nothing to explain.”
“Then do so anyway.”
She looked at Julian.
“This should be our wedding day.”
Julian's voice was quiet.
“I just learned I have four children.”
“And I'm trying to be understanding.”
“Understanding?”
His disbelief was sharp.
“You lied to Evelyn for months while carrying my children.”
Vanessa flinched.
“You told me your marriage was already over emotionally.”
I looked at Julian.
He looked ashamed.
“That isn't what we're discussing,” Charles said.
For once, I agreed with him.
He focused on Vanessa.
“Why did Evelyn's paternity report frighten you?”
“It didn't.”
Margaret stood.
“Vanessa.”
“I was shocked.”
Rachel entered quietly.
“I don't think you were.”
Everyone turned.
Vanessa stared at her.
“Who are you?”
“Dr. Rachel Monroe.”
Recognition moved across Vanessa's face.
Small.
But visible.
Rachel caught it.
“So you remember me.”
“No.”
“You were at Evelyn and Julian's engagement party.”
“A lot of people were.”
“Yes.”
Rachel glanced at Julian.
“So was Adrian Keller.”
Vanessa's entire body went still.
Julian frowned.
“Who?”
Charles answered.
“Dr. Keller?”
Everyone looked at him.
“You know him?” Margaret asked.
Charles nodded slowly.
“Adrian Keller's father sat on the Whitmore Capital advisory board for years.”
Julian's face sharpened.
“What does he have to do with this?”
Rachel spoke carefully.
“Maybe nothing.”
Vanessa exhaled.
“Exactly.”
Rachel continued.
“But Adrian Keller is a reproductive endocrinologist.”
Silence.
Julian stared at Vanessa.
