Chapter 19
On the front was a faded image of two little boys standing beside a woman whose face was unmistakably Celia’s.
One boy had a serious expression and dark hair falling over his forehead.
The other was laughing, his hand wrapped around his brother’s shoulder.
Celia turned the photograph over.
Written on the back were three names.
Lucian.
Nico.
And Sofia’s final note.
Protect my son until he forgets he was ever theirs.
Norah looked up.
Celia’s voice broke as she added the words that changed everything.
“Your mother did not raise you alone.”
She pointed to Nico.
“She raised him too.”

“She raised him too.”
Celia’s words remained in the basement long after her voice fell silent.
Norah looked at Nico, but he did not appear to hear anything beyond the sentence itself.
His face had lost all color.
The photograph trembled between Celia’s fingers.
For years, he had believed his brother had vanished and his mother had died.
Now both stories had opened beneath him, revealing a truth large enough to alter every memory he possessed.
Mara was the first to move.
She stepped closer to Norah and placed one hand gently against her back.
Norah barely felt it.
Her attention remained fixed on Nico.
“What does she mean?” he asked.
Celia’s expression folded inward with grief.
“She means exactly what she said.”
“No.”
The word came from him quietly, almost as if he were speaking to the child he had once been.
“My mother died.”
“Your father told you I died.”
“He held a funeral.”
“He held a funeral for the woman who refused to give him back what he had taken.”
Nico looked at the photograph.
“Taken?”
Celia descended the final stair.
For a moment, she seemed too fragile to be standing in the dim basement, but when she reached the floor, her posture steadied.
“Your father believed our family belonged to him.”
“He believed everything belonged to him,” Nico said.
The bitterness in his voice was old, worn smooth by years of use.
Celia touched the edge of the blue ledger.
“After Lucian became ill, Matteo blamed me.”
“Blamed you for what?”
“For allowing him to become weak.”
Norah felt Nico’s attention sharpen.
Celia continued before he could ask another question.
