Chapter 28
“And if you ever tell Arthur you could forget my name by Friday again, I will make sure you spend the rest of your life proving you were wrong.”
Nico’s smile widened.
“That sounds fair.”
Norah leaned closer.
“It is not a threat.”
“I know.”
“It is a boundary.”
“I know.”
He lifted her hand and pressed his lips to her knuckles.
The gesture was familiar, but it no longer belonged to the woman who had once accepted tenderness as proof that she was safe.
Now she knew safety was built through truth, choice, and the courage to remain present when love became difficult.
Behind them, the door to the old kitchen stood open.
Sunlight spilled across the floor.
Inside, a group of young cooks were preparing bread beneath Sofia’s faded photograph.
Nico looked toward the room.
“Do you think your mother would approve?”
Norah followed his gaze.
“She would say we were late.”
“Late for what?”
“For understanding that we belonged to ourselves before we belonged to anyone else.”
He nodded.
The sentence seemed to settle somewhere deep inside him.
They entered the kitchen together.
Not as a man and woman bound by secrets they had inherited.
Not as two people trapped by the names written for them.
They entered as partners who had looked directly at the past and chosen not to repeat it.
And in the warm, ordinary room where Sofia’s memory lived on, Norah understood what her mother had meant all along.
A home was not the place where someone kept you.
It was the place where you remained because you were free to leave.
Nico looked at her across the crowded kitchen.
Norah smiled.
Then, with the afternoon light resting gently between them, they began again.
