He continued.

“The penthouse is yours if you want it.”

“I don’t want a gift.”

“It isn’t a gift.”

“Then what is it?”

“An acknowledgment that you built a home there too.”

Norah studied the wet pavement.

“I don’t know where I want to live.”

“Then you don’t have to decide today.”

It was the first time Nico had said something that did not contain a solution.

The absence of pressure felt more meaningful than any promise.

They found Elias in a small office above a closed bookstore.

He was waiting beside a window, his silver hair disordered and his old hands wrapped around a cup of tea.

When he saw Celia, he stood.

The two of them looked at each other with the exhaustion of people who had carried the same secret for too long.

“You told her,” Elias said.

“Her mother told her,” Celia replied.

Elias turned toward Norah.

“I am sorry.”

“For what?”

“For making you discover the truth in pieces.”

“You were trying to protect me.”

“So was everyone else.”

Her answer made him lower his gaze.

Norah placed the blue ledger on his desk.

“I don’t want protection that requires lies.”

“No.”

“I want the whole truth.”

“You deserve it.”

Elias opened a locked drawer and removed a packet of documents.

He explained that Sofia had not merely hidden Nico.

She had also created a legal trust containing the original records of Matteo’s dealings.

The trust had been designed to transfer control to Norah when she turned thirty, unless she chose to reject it.

Norah stared at the documents.

“My mother left this to me?”

“She left you the right to decide what happened to it.”

“What does it control?”

“Several businesses, properties, and accounts.”

Nico’s expression hardened.

“Why was I never told?”

“Because the trust required both of you.”

“Both of us?”

Elias nodded.

“Sofia believed neither of you should inherit alone.”

Norah scanned the first page.

Her name appeared beside Nico’s.

The arrangement was not one of ownership.

It was one of consent.

No major asset could be sold, transferred, or used without both signatures.

The structure had been designed to make cooperation necessary where the Moretti family had always relied upon control.

“She wanted us to choose together,” Norah said.

“She wanted you to build something your father never understood,” Elias replied.

“What?”

“A family that cannot be purchased or commanded.”

Nico looked at Norah.
