Before Vanessa could answer, Nolan’s phone buzzed violently on the counter. Then again. And again.

He picked it up. Twelve unread messages from his chief legal officer. Six missed calls from the lead independent director of the board.

A headline notification popped up from The Wall Street Journal:

BREAKING: SEC and Department of Justice Launch Inquiries into Pierce Dynamics Over Suspected Related-Party Transactions and Inflated Asset Valuations.

Beneath the headline, the second paragraph was a death sentence:

“...The investigation follows an exhaustive forensic dossier submitted by Whitmore Capital, which recently concluded a strategic review of regional logistics acquisitions. Sources confirm the forensic work was led by former Pierce Dynamics co-founder and senior analyst Emma Pierce...”

Co-founder.

Nolan’s knees nearly buckled. When he had drafted the divorce documents, he had used a loophole in their pre-incorporation agreements to wipe her name off the intellectual property filings. But Emma hadn't sued him then; she had simply preserved the digital timestamps of every line of core code she had authored, dating back to 2018.

He sprinted out of the penthouse without putting on his overcoat.

The Pierce Dynamics boardroom on the forty-fourth floor of the Midtown tower was an abattoir.

When Nolan burst through the double glass doors, breathless and disheveled, the room fell dead silent.

None of the board members were smiling. None of them greeted him. At the head of the table sat Arthur Vance, the sixty-eight-year-old venture capitalist whose early backing had given Nolan his legitimacy.

“Sit down, Nolan,” Vance said. His voice was freezing.

Nolan swallowed hard, adjusting his tie with shaking fingers. “Arthur, listen to me. This is a personal vendetta. Emma is bitter. She’s colluding with Graham Whitmore to drive down our share price so Whitmore Capital can launch a hostile takeover. It’s corporate sabotage—”

“Shut up,” Vance said calmly.

Nolan stopped, the words catching in his throat.

Vance slid a thick leather-bound folder across the glass table. It stopped inches from Nolan’s chest.

“That is the forensic breakdown of Blue Horizon Holdings,” Vance said. “You didn't just hide assets from your ex-wife during your divorce proceedings, Nolan. You routed seventeen million dollars of Pierce Dynamics’ operating revenue through three ghost entities to make our third-quarter margins look twelve percent higher than they actually were.”

“I... Arthur, that was a temporary bridge loan structure—”

“It’s wire fraud,” Vance stated flatly. “It’s securities fraud. And it was filed under your personal electronic signature.”
