“She’s my ex-wife!” Nolan hissed, losing the battle against his unraveling composure. “And she’s carrying my child!”

At that, Emma finally moved. She placed her right hand flat over the curve of her belly—a slow, protective, instinctive gesture.

“He is my child, Nolan,” she said, her words crystalline and measured. “You made that abundantly clear five months ago in our kitchen. You told me I would ‘figure it out.’ You told me the timing was terrible. You signed away your parental presumption in the custody pre-waiver your high-priced attorneys drafted so you wouldn’t have to pay child support based on Pierce Dynamics’ upcoming valuation.”

She looked directly into his eyes, and Nolan saw the absolute void where eight years of devotion used to live.

“I figured it out,” Emma said simply.

“Emma—”

“Go back to your table, Pierce,” Graham interrupted, his voice dropping into that chilling, executive register that had brought down Fortune 500 boards. “Before I call the house manager to have you removed. And before I call the SEC compliance director on my personal line to deliver the files Ms. Pierce finalized at four o'clock this afternoon.”

Nolan took half a step backward as if struck.

Across the room, Vanessa was staring at him, her face tight with humiliation as several tables of venture capitalists and society matrons watched the drama unfold. The whispering had already begun. Phones were being subtly angled under tablecloths.

Nolan wanted to scream. He wanted to demand that Emma remember who took care of whom, who had built the empire, who was the visionary. But looking at her sitting beside Graham Whitmore—composed, brilliant, untouchable—the horrifying realization struck him like cold water:

He hadn’t built anything alone.

He had merely been the handsome, charming face in front of the engine. Emma had been the engine. And he had deliberately tossed her out into the cold, completely blind to the fact that without her, his machine was full of stolen parts and rotten foundation.

Nolan swallowed hard, turned on his heel, and walked stiffly back to his table.

He didn’t sit down.

“Get your coat,” Nolan told Vanessa through clenched teeth.

“What? Nolan, we haven’t even ordered the main—”

“I said get your coat!”

Every diner within three tables turned to look. Vanessa flushed a violent crimson, grabbed her designer clutch, and hurried after him as he practically fled toward the coat check.

Behind them, in the serene glow of the conservatory window, Emma watched him leave.
