He looked up at her, his eyes wild with desperate, pathetic hope.

“You can tell Graham to withdraw the supplementary filings,” Nolan pleaded, his voice cracking. “You have influence with him. If Whitmore Capital agrees to an out-of-court arbitration, the DOJ will drop the criminal referral. Emma, please! For the baby’s sake! He needs his father! You can’t let your son grow up knowing his father went to prison!”

Emma watched him.

She remembered the nights she had spent alone in their Queens apartment, counting pennies for prenatal vitamins while Nolan posted pictures of champagne towers in St. Barts.

She remembered the night he had brought Vanessa into their home, the smudged red lipstick, the bored, cruel shrug of his shoulders when she showed him the ultrasound.

“You’ll figure it out.”

Those four words had nearly killed her. But they had also resurrected her.

“Nolan,” Emma said, her voice quiet, steady, and devastatingly calm.

He stopped babbling, looking at her with wide, wet eyes.

“When you stood in our kitchen and looked at the picture of our son,” Emma said, “you didn't see a child. You saw an inconvenience. You saw a line item on an expense sheet that was getting in the way of your next press release.”

“I was wrong, Emma! I was terrified!”

“No,” she said gently, shaking her head. “You weren't terrified. You were arrogant. You thought that because I loved you, I was weak. You thought that because I was quiet, I was stupid. You thought you could take everything I gave you—my mind, my youth, my dignity—and trade it for shiny things that told you you were a god.”

She leaned forward slightly, her brown eyes clear and unbreakable.

“My son will have a father, Nolan. He will have men in his life who understand honor, loyalty, and strength. But he will never look at you and learn that cruelty is the price of success.”

“Emma, don't do this to me—”

“I didn't do this to you, Nolan,” she said, her voice firm. “You did. You signed every invoice. You lied on every tax form. You created Blue Horizon Holdings. You cheated on your wife. You abandoned your child. You built this trap with your own hands. I just turned on the lights so the world could see it.”

Nolan shook his head violently, tears streaming down his hollow cheeks. “What am I supposed to do? What do I do now?”
